The Potential Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Fermi Paradox

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving into one of the most transformative developments in human history, but its emergence raises intriguing questions about the search for extraterrestrial life.

Scientists have long pondered the Fermi Paradox, which highlights the contradiction between the high likelihood of alien civilizations existing and the absence of concrete evidence for their existence. Now, some researchers are exploring the possibility that the development of AI, particularly Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), could play a pivotal role in this cosmic conundrum.

Michael Garrett’s recent study suggests that the evolution of ASI could serve as a “Great Filter” – a crucial hurdle that intelligent civilizations must overcome to advance and achieve interstellar capabilities. According to Garrett, unchecked ASI development could lead to the extinction of civilizations within a mere 200 years, potentially explaining the absence of detectable signs of extraterrestrial life.

This hypothesis underscores the urgent need for robust regulations governing AI development and underscores the importance of humanity’s pursuit of a multi-planetary future to mitigate existential risks.

However, beyond immediate concerns about job displacement, the ethical and societal implications of advanced AI pose significant challenges. Issues such as algorithmic bias, societal manipulation, and the prospect of AI making autonomous decisions raise profound and unresolved questions about the future of humanity.

The late Stephen Hawking famously cautioned against the unchecked advancement of AI, warning of its potential to surpass human intelligence and even replace humanity altogether – a scenario eerily reminiscent of the concept of ASI.

While the rapid ascent of AI offers exciting prospects, it also demands careful consideration of its potential dangers. By proactively addressing these challenges and ensuring responsible AI development, humanity can harness the transformative power of AI for progress rather than allowing it to become a potential “Great Filter” in our cosmic journey.
