Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today introduced and presented to the nation, the submarine Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) linking the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the continent with a video conference. The cornerstone of this work was laid by the Prime Minister on 30 December 2018 in Port Blair. The PM also said that communication will now allow for endless opportunities on the islands. He said the installation of the 2300 KMs submarine cable and completed it before the target was commendable. The premier said the service had started today in most of the islands from Chennai to Port Blair, Port Blair to Little Andaman and Port Blair to Swaraj Island.
The Prime Minister also said that Andaman & Nicobar will be developed as a base for Port Led Development as it is in competition from many World ports. The Prime Minister said the country has a better port network and its connectivity will be able to provide. trade development in the 21st century.
Road Transport &Highway role in economic development
The Minister of Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari said in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of reaching the final milestone, we are committed to building all safe weather roads to provide seamless connections to the islands. In a series of tweets Shri Gadkari informed that the Beodnabad to Ferrargunj phase of the NH-4 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was completed in 2019.
He said the 26 km site was built at a cost of Rs. 170 Crore was considered part of the Andaman & Nicobar Island Dweep Connectivity Program. The Minister said it had improved access and ensured free traffic flow from Port Blair to other cities in the Andaman region. The NH-4, ‘Andaman Trunk Road’ is an archipelago of life on the islands and plays a key role in the economic development of the A&N Islands, he added.
