Baghlan and Badakhshan Provinces, Afghanistan: Recent floods in Baghlan and Badakhshan provinces of Afghanistan have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 16 lives, including women and children, and the destruction of hundreds of homes. Local officials have reported that approximately 500 houses have been completely or partially destroyed by the floods, affecting various areas including Dand-e-Ghori, Doshi, Pul-e-Khumri, and Morchak.
Impact of the Floods
Abdul Ghafoor Khadem, the Taliban-appointed Baghlan Police Command chief, described the severe impact of the floods, particularly in the Larkhab area of Doshi district in Baghlan province. He reported the loss of six lives, including three children, one woman, and two men, along with the destruction of over 300 houses.
Similarly, Mohammad Kamgar, head of the Natural Disaster Management in Badakhshan, highlighted the tragic toll on families, stating that ten members of one family lost their lives and another person was injured due to the floods.
Calls for Assistance
Amidst the devastation, affected families have voiced frustration over the delayed arrival of aid. Victims like Hizbullah and Ziaullah, who lost family members and belongings to the floods, emphasized the urgent need for assistance from the Taliban-led government and aid agencies.
The World Food Programme (WFP) reported significant challenges in delivering aid to the affected areas, with many regions inaccessible by vehicles due to the floods. To overcome this, aid workers have resorted to alternative methods, including using donkeys to transport emergency supplies to Baghlan.
Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis
The floods have exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, with over 300 people losing their lives in the past week alone. Residential houses have been destroyed, and vast swathes of agricultural land have been ruined, further compounding the challenges faced by affected communities.
As the devastation continues to unfold, there is an urgent need for concerted efforts by authorities, humanitarian organizations, and the international community to provide immediate assistance to those affected by the floods. Addressing the humanitarian crisis and supporting recovery efforts will be crucial in helping affected communities rebuild and recover from this tragedy.
