Rescue workers in Nepal are battling with landslide that has left 22 dead and 10 injured

Rescue workers in Nepal are battling torrential rains to pull bodies from the rubble of houses buried by a landslide that has left 22 dead and 10 injured. The latest disaster happened in Achham district, about 450 km west of the capital Kathmandu. Flash floods and landslides are a common occurrence in the Himalayan nation’s mountainous terrain, especially during the annual monsoon rains between June and September.

Flash floods and landslides have killed at least 70 people and left 13 missing across the country this year, according to official figures on Sunday. Volunteers, police and military rescuers searched for missing people in Achham. In neighboring Kailali district, authorities found the body of a fisherman who had been swept away by the overflowing Geta River.

Yagya Raj Joshi, an official in Kailali, said about 1,500 people displaced by the floods were sheltered in public buildings. Local media broadcast footage of swathes of flooded farms, a destroyed suspension bridge and villagers wading through chest-deep water.
