The Indo-Bhutan border gates at Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu along the Assam border will reopen for tourists on September 23

The Indo-Bhutan border gates at Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu along the Assam border will reopen for tourists on September 23 after a two-and-a-half year gap due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Government of Bhutan has officially announced that the international border with India will be opened on September 23 as Covid cases subside. We are getting ready to open the border and provide a good experience to the visitors,” said Tashi Penjore, Director Himalayan Kingdom (Law and Order) of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Culture.

Over the past two and a half years, many officials on both sides have changed, and we have not been able to meet and establish the friendships and personal contacts that are essential for people living in the border areas of both countries. We look forward to more such visits,” he added. Earlier on Wednesday, the Bhutanese official met 15th Battalion Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Commander and Area Command In-charge Neeraj Chand and all SSB officials. The meeting was held at the SSB Regional Headquarters in Chaprakata in of Bongaigaon district in Assam.

He also urged Indian tourists to visit various places in Bhutan after entering the country through Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar gates. The Government of Bhutan has planned eco-tourism, bird watching and other packages for the visitors. A standard operating procedure (SOP) has been drawn up to facilitate smooth movement of passengers, Penjore informed.
