55-year-old woman who suffered a severe head injury recently donated her vital organs to AIIMS

The family of a 55-year-old woman who suffered a severe head injury recently donated her vital organs to AIIMS on Tuesday, helping to save the lives of four people, the hospital said. The deceased, Krishna, had gone for a morning walk on August 27. A local who knew her saw her lying unconscious by the roadside and informed her husband. She was immediately rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma center where she was admitted with a serious head injury. On August 29, Krishna became brain dead despite efforts to save her, doctors said.
A team of doctors and transplant coordinators from the Organ Retrieval Banking Organization (ORBO) advised the family to donate organs. About six years ago, Krishna’s youngest son-in-law Kishan faced a similar situation when his mother became brain dead after an accident and he and his family donated her organs in Lucknow, the doctor said. Faced with a similar situation again, Kishan motivated his wife’s family to opt for organ donation. The ORBO team’s guidance along with Kishan’s encouragement motivated the family to agree to donate her organs and tissues.
Dr Aarti Vij, Head of ORBO at AIIMS, said, “Awareness of brain stem death and organ donation was crucial in the decision in Krishna’s case. This again underlines the importance of awareness activities regarding organ and tissue donation. “ORBO, AIIMS, New Delhi regularly conducts various IEC activities to create public awareness in this regard. With increasing knowledge, more and more people will come forward to commit and donate organs and tissues. Organ donation and transplantation is a challenging process as the entire the process must be completed in a very short window of time. Every minute is invaluable.”
There are many stakeholders at every stage of the process, she said, adding that attending physicians, transplant coordinators, the OT team, forensics, organ procurement teams, police departments, transport departments, support departments and even the public knowingly or unknowingly pave the way for unimpeded transit green corridor. “Without effective coordination and cooperation between each of them, these processes cannot culminate well,” Vij said.
“Losing a mother is an indescribable pain. It saddens me to see this happen to such a loving family. But thanks to organ donation, she will once again become a mother and giver of life to many people who would otherwise have lost their lives,” he added. she added. Krishna’s liver was allotted to ILBS, one kidney to AIIMS, another to AHR&R and heart to Fortis, Okhla through NOTTO. “I lost my mother in an accident in Lucknow. That’s when the doctors approached me for organ donation and I, being the eldest son, convinced my family to donate her organs. Over the years I felt happy and proud that my mother saved many lives even after her death. “Today I am losing my mother-in-law. I told my family members that we should donate her organs. It is fateful that we have lost the greatest strength, but by deciding to donate her organs, we will save another’s mother or wife or brother or son and that will bring peace and contentment into their lives,” said Kishan.
