Shri Piyush Goyal said that all existing laboratories in India should be upgraded for better utilization of testing facilities

Shri Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Commerce and Industry and Textiles said that all existing laboratories in India should be upgraded and mapped for better utilization of testing facilities. Delivering his presidential address at the fourth meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) at its headquarters in New Delhi yesterday, Shri Goyal laid special emphasis on the importance of modernization and integration of laboratory infrastructure.

The minister said: “Superior laboratories will support the creation of better standards and facilitate certification. Young technicians and engineering students should be exposed to testing procedures by organizing field trips to these laboratories”. The meeting was attended by Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and ex-officio Vice-Chairman of the BIS Board of Governors along with eminent members of the Board of Governors.

Congratulating BIS on completing 75 years, Shri Goyal said that BIS has evolved with the country and is continuously contributing to the national economy. He emphasized that BIS is playing a significant role in the development of ‘Brand India’. The power of youth and motherhood should be harnessed to achieve quality consciousness. He appreciated the initiative of BIS to create standards clubs in school to sensitize young people about standards and quality.

He further expressed his desire to make India a leader in emerging areas of manufacturing and appreciated the efforts being made by BIS towards developing standards to support the same. In his speech, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey praised BIS for formulating standards that enable manufacturers to produce internationally acceptable products, which is not only a huge step in favor of consumers but also facilitates exports.

He further added that the ‘standards revolution’ is the demand of today, where the implementation of standards should support businesses and not be seen as a hindrance. On this occasion, Shri Goyal inaugurated the renovated ‘Mankalaya’ building of BIS Headquarters. He also launched a revised BIS website which provides easy access to information through user-friendly interfaces and has been updated with all important BIS initiatives. Pamphlets on the National Building Code and a handbook on the National Electricity Code were also published. The Governing Council members discussed the initiatives taken by BIS since the last Governing Council meeting and shared their valuable views/suggestions in this regard.
