Punjab Congress leader Manish Tewari on Wednesday responded to speculation over a photo of him shaking hands with Prime Minister Modi, saying the photo only showed “protocol and decorum”. Punjabis are neither small-minded nor small-minded, the Congress leader said, denying that there was more to the photo posted by a journalist on Twitter. “If Shri Narendra Modi visits my parliamentary constituency Sri Anandpur Sahib, courtesy requests that I welcome him regardless of political differences,” the Congress MP tweeted.
Prime Minister Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Homi Bhaba Cancer Hospital and Research Center in Sri Anandpur Sahib, Manish Tewari’s parliamentary constituency. “Dr Manmohan Singh laid foundation stone on 30th December 2013. Speculations on social media have been triggered as the Congress faces upheaval with veteran leaders leaving their internal posts. After Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned as the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir campaign committee, Anand Sharma vacated the chairmanship of the party’s state management committee. On Wednesday, Jaiveer Shergill left the party bringing allegations of sycophancy.
The party needs a revival which is possible through collective efforts, Anand Sharma said on Wednesday after a meeting with state party chief Pratibha Virbhadra Singh. He also said that his resignation would not stand in the way of running the election campaign for the party. “I will campaign for the Congress party wherever needed. Congress must come out of factionalism and remain united. We are all Congressmen. What is important is that the Congress party remains strong,” he said. The Congress said it would stick to its schedule of electing a new chief by September 20. Interim Chief Sonia Gandhi is abroad for a medical along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi.
