Economy Focus: Assam Police destroyed a huge quantity of drugs worth around ₹ 1,920 crore recovered in numerous raids

The Assam Police on Saturday destroyed a huge quantity of drugs worth around ₹ 1,920 crore recovered in numerous raids conducted in Cachar district. According to the police, about 6.214 kg of heroin worth ₹31.07 crore, 683 kg of ganja worth ₹1,751 crore, 271 kg of cough syrup bottles worth ₹16.26 crore and 6.04 million pieces of Yaba tablets worth 20 .8 crore for ₹ 1 as part of its massive program to eradicate smuggled drugs. The Assam Police on Saturday destroyed a huge quantity of drugs worth around ₹ 1,920 crore recovered in numerous raids conducted in Cachar district.

 According to the police, about 6.214 kg of heroin worth ₹31.07 crore, 683 kg of ganja worth ₹1,751 crore, 271 kg of cough syrup bottles worth ₹16.26 crore and 6.04 million pieces of Yaba tablets worth 20 .8 crore for ₹ 1 as part of its massive program to eradicate smuggled drugs. The international market value of the total drugs destroyed by the police was estimated at ₹1920.02 crores. DIG Kangkan Jyoti Saikia said the anti-drug operations launched on the instructions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would continue.

“Drugs worth ₹1,920.02 crore were destroyed here today. We have started anti-drug operations from May 10, 2021 as directed by the Chief Minister and our operations will continue,” quoted DIG Kangkan Jyoti Saikia as saying. Guwahati police burnt 935 kg of drugs seized at Hatishila Daampara under Pragjyotishpur police station on the outskirts of the city. The drug bonfire was set on fire by Harmeet Singh, Special DGP and Commissioner of Police, Guwahati along with Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Joint Commissioner of Police, Guwahati. Harmeet Singh, Commissioner of Police, said: “The Chief Minister of Assam has given a clear directive to fight this war on drugs until it is completely wiped out.

 I want to take this opportunity to reaffirm our absolute commitment to the war on drugs and anyone associated with it.” with the drug trade will be spared. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone indulging in drug trade.””This is historic and never happened in a country where disposal of seized illegal narcotics is going on across the country (at 4 locations) on the directives of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Drugs worth ₹100 crore were burnt today,” he added. Drugs worth ₹68 crore were also destroyed in Assam’s Karimganj district. Similarly, large quantities of seized drugs were destroyed in Biswanath and Hailakandi districts.
