Among the many reasons men may have a craving for women at least when it comes to bad skin inflammation women women have very low incidence of severe psoriasis. However, the underlying cause of the divorce is not yet clear. Now a team of researchers have found that the female hormone estradiol suppresses psoriasis, and the protective role of the hormone has provided a basis for its therapeutic potential.
“Our results not only expose molecular mechanisms of psoriasis but also shed new light on our understanding of the physical role of estradiol,” said Tetsuya Honda of Hahamatsu University School of Medicine, formerly of Kyoto University.The team examined conditional knockout mice, or cko mice, which were secreted from the ovaries but supplemented with estradiol or placebo pellets. In contrast to wild-type mice, cko mice lacking the natural hormone ovarian estradiol showed signs of severe skin inflammation.
When these mice were given estradiol, the production of IL-17A and IL-1β cytokines in neutrophil cells and macrophages was reversed, reducing inflammation. This effect has also been observed in in vitro neutrophils interest to researchers is the lack of estrogen receptors in immune cells that make estradiol less effective against cytokines.” These results show that estradiol suppresses psoriatic inflammation by regulating neutrophil cells and macrophages,” concludes the author.
