NASA and ESA (European Space Agency), partnering with the Mars Sample Return Program, have established a new team of researchers to develop the scientific strength of Mars rock and sediment samples that will be returned to Earth for in-depth analysis. Called the Mars Sample Return Campaign Science Group, 16 researchers will serve as a scientific tool for campaign project teams and related Earth-based projects, such as sample detection and processing.”These 16 people will be masters of the Mars Sample Return science level,” said Michael Meyer, a leading scientist at Mars Exploration at NASA headquarters in Washington. “They will build a roadmap for the achievement of the science of this historic endeavor – including establishing sampling-related decision-making processes and designing processes that will allow the international scientific community to be involved in these first international samples.”
NASA’s Mars Return Return Campaign promises to change human understanding of Mars by bringing scientifically selected samples to Earth for study using the most sophisticated tools around the world. This strategic partnership between NASA and ESA will be the first goal to recover samples from another planet and the first launch from another planet. Samples collected by NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover while exploring an ancient lake bed are thought to provide the best possible clues as to the origin of Mars, including the life force of the past. By better understanding the history of Mars, we will improve our understanding of all the rocky planets of the solar system, including the Earth. The campaign will achieve the goal of exploring the solar system, which has been a priority since the 1970s and in the Final Three-Year Survey of the National Academy of Sciences Planetary Decadal.
