Governance Focus: Vice President interacts with students of Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership

The vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu today emphasized the importance of world peace through human progress and said that “terrorism, division and hatred have no place in civilized society”. Working with students of the Indian Institute of Democratic Leadership in Upa-Rashtrapati Nivas, Shri Naidu also emphasized that Indians are not only proud of their culture, but also respect all cultures and religions. “We believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the whole world is one family)”, he added. He said India was the most ignorant country in the world and anyone, regardless of religion, could take the top of the constitution. Emphasizing the importance of unity in diversity, he said that “sharing and caring is the core values of Indian civilization.”

Shri Naidu is critical of denigrating any religion or religious icons that are contrary to the Indian tradition, which believes in plurality and integration. “No one should hate or be slandered in any religion. It is not acceptable,” said the Deputy President. Responding to a variety of student questions, Shri Naidu said that while protesting was a democratic right, using violent means would harm the nation’s interests. Expressing his concern about the disruption of the legislature, he said the way forward was to “negotiate, negotiate and make decisions” and not to disrupt. He added that “parties should check whether they are strengthening or weakening democracy (with distractions)”. He urged the media to refrain from highlighting uncontrolled conduct in the legislature, but to highlight constructive debates.

The Deputy President strived to give women adequate representation in all spheres of affairs, including politics. Speaking to the students about the qualities needed in leadership, he said in life one has to behave well and dedicate oneself to the work of the people. “In addition to ideas, good behavior is important,” he stressed. He also emphasized the importance of teamwork, good communication skills and regular communication with people in order to be a great leader.
