Sports Focus: Messi inspired Argentina to a 3-0 win in Finalissima against Italy

Encouraged by Lionel Messi‘s assistants at Wembley, the Argentine players tossed their star player into the air after encouraging them to win a second title in less than a year. The national team’s victory finally comes to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, near the end of his trophy complete club work. Argentina collected their first Finalissima trophy on Wednesday by beating Italy 3-0 in a meeting of the South American and European champions, while Messi helped Argentina win the Copa America last July with his first major title with the national team.

Looking at the two assistants while playing for Argentina 161, there is no sign that the 34-year-old Messi slowed down with a chance of winning the first World Cup title later this year. Messi said: “We knew it was going to be a good game and a good preparation for the champion.

The opening goal was due to Messi’s ingenuity which took him past Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Argentina captain Lautaro Mart and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 28th minute. Martnez turned the creator into the first half by connecting the ball with Angel Di Mara to make Donnarumma, past Giorgio Chiellini. The 37-year-old Italian captain came off the break in his 117th game for the last time playing internationally. The win wrapped up in the fourth minute of the stoppage when Messi found the ball in the middle of the line and stormed off the edge of the box to block Di Lorenzo’s challenge of setting up substitute Paulo Dybala to hit the low net.

It put Wembley in second place at Messi after winning the Champions League in 2011 with Barcelona beating Manchester United. During a rally at Wembley Stadium, the Argentines tossed Messi in the air before catching him. It was a sad comeback for the Italians at Wembley Stadium where they won Euro 2020 last year and as they face a second consecutive defeat of the World Cup.

Argentina will head to Qatar in November with another trophy created as part of a UEFA-CONMEBOL partnership that challenges FIFA’s international rise. The selection of London as the venue was confirmed by more than 87,000 people at Wembley, and UEFA choosing a stadium despite the turmoil in the Euro 2020 final caused by England fans.
