Cosmic rays can help keep the earth’s clocks aligned

The earth has a fixed, precise timing system that controls our clocks. Mankind uses everything we do, from our financial systems to satellite navigation, computer and mobile networks, and GPS. But the current system is incomplete, and dangerous for cyber attacks and disruptions. Given the importance of accurate punctuality in our society (as the basic foundation of health in the 21st century), experts are always looking for ways to improve the system and increase inefficiency. Researchers at the University of Tokyo have taken a major step forward, developing a new timeline that effectively uses cosmic rays to measure earth’s clocks.

Major challenges

There are two major challenges to timing. The first is to keep the clock accurate for a long time. Humans have been progressively improving over the centuries, from ancient water clocks to large pendulum clocks in the nineteenth century. Modern clocks usually operate using the rhythmic vibration of quartz crystals, although these also fail to keep up with the accuracy of the atomic clocks, which saves time by exploiting the energy needed to change the rotation of the electron around the atom. the Universe. With these atomic estimates, the latest and greatest clocks lose about one second every ten million years.

But secondly – and the most difficult challenge to keep track of time – it ensures that most watches around the world are in harmony. Satellite clocks in orbit, such as the ones we use for GPS, need constant measurement from ground-based atomic clocks in order to operate consistently (also, they should consider extending time, as time moves differently from orbit than below. .Thank you Einstein!) This is the problem of harmonizing Professor Hiroyuki Tanaka of the University of Tokyo who hopes to improve in a new way.

Tanaka calls the CTS method, which represents the Cosmic Time System, and relies on sensors that detect particles remaining in cosmic radiation colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. The cosmic rays are scattered about 15 miles [15 km] high, causing particles of matter, some of which reach down to the earth, including muons that move near the speed of light. CTS devices in many locations can detect these animals and use them to synchronize with each other. Each muon shower has its own unique signature, which allows CTS devices to identify one event and synchronize with each other based on that event.

The muons go into the rock and into the water, which means that these devices will work inside buildings, under tanks, and underground railway tunnels. “Satellite-based synchronization has many blind spots on poles, in mountainous areas or under water,” said Tanaka, “and the CTS could close these gaps and so on.”

Tanaka believes that CTS can change the way punctuality works, and perhaps even navigate through it. “It is very easy to keep time accurate these days. For example, atomic clocks have been doing this for decades, ”said Tanaka. “However, these are big and expensive devices that are easy to break. This is one of the reasons why I work in an advanced time management system. Also, with regard to time measurement, area measurement can also be improved. So, CTS is a precursor to GPS switching, but that is still a bit far off the line.
