Cyclonic Circulation Will Still Prevail In The Bay Of Bengal Over The Next Few Days

Typhoon ‘Asani’ may not reach the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as it is likely to be weak within the next 48 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department said in its latest forecast on Monday. However, fishermen and coastal residents were advised not to enter the deep sea above the central parts of the Bay of Bengal on May 9 and 10 and above the northwestern region connected north of Odisha with West Bengal from May 10 and 12.

Here are the latest developments:

1. Asani, meaning ‘rage’ in Sinhala, travels northwest at a speed of 25km per hour in the Bay of Bengal near Andhra Pradesh and Odisha on the coast.

2. Asani is expected to gradually weaken into a tidal wave and return north-northeast and extend northwest of the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha, the Meteorological Department said.

3. Light to moderate rainfall may be from Tuesday evening in most regions across the coast of Odisha and heavy rainfall (7 -11cm) in one or two areas over Gajapati, Ganjam, and Puri, reports IMD.

4. The typhoon is located approximately 680km southeast of Puri and 580km from Visakhapatnam from noon on Monday.

5. National and government disaster relief departments are vigilant despite the fact that no storm forecasts are likely to cause damage. A distant 2 warning signal (requesting ships not to approach the coast) has been raised in all the ports of Odisha due to the impending hurricane.
