The UK and Japan are committed to speed-up security relations through a Landmark Agreement

The Prime Minister will host a Japanese counterpart today to deepen UK ties with Asia’s closest security partner, and accelerate cooperation between defense, trade and green energy. Leaders will basically agree on the Recurrent Access Agreement, which allows Japanese and British forces to work, exercise and work together, increase UK commitment to the Indo-Pacific and further safeguard international peace and security. The UK will be the first European country to have such an agreement with Japan.

The historic defense partnership, which will see the UK and Japanese Armed Forces work together to carry out training, joint exercise and disaster relief activities, will build on our already close cooperation in defense and defense technology, such as the Future Combat Air System.

Deepening trade and investment relations, the Prime Minister will also announce a new trade ambassador to Japan – to accelerate strong trade and investment relations between the two countries.

Greg Clark MP has been appointed to lead the next chapter between the UK and Japan, as Japanese companies invest billions of pounds in the UK economy through major infrastructure projects, including wind farms and high-speed trains. The announcement comes as the UK negotiates an entry into CPTPP, an Indo-Pacific trading platform costing $ 11trn Japan is chair of the UK working group in CPTPP.

During the meeting on Downing Street, leaders are expected to enjoy food products from the Fukushima prefecture, including Japanese popcorn, as part of marking the elimination of the remaining restrictions on food products from the Japanese region.
