Nigeria trains kidnappers using victims as human shields – president

Armed robbers abducted dozens of passengers while attacking a train in northern Nigeria using civilians as human shields, making it difficult for the military to do rescue work, President MuhammaduBuhari said on Monday. The Nigerian railway company said last month. that 168 people were missing following the March 28 attack. Learn more

Local media last week showed a video of the abduction victims, including a newborn baby of one of the abducted women. Reuters could not verify the authenticity of the video. Buhari said the government, which has been criticized for not doing enough to rescue passengers, is trying to avoid “adverse consequences” in any rescue operation.

“Critical situation … Any rescue operation that leads to the death of any hostage cannot be considered a success.” Kidnappings have become a daily occurrence in Nigeria, where armed groups kidnap people to rescue them and hide in the forests. The brutality of the attacks has raised fears of insecurity in the northeast rebel country and rising crime rates across the country.
