Ancient Mud Volcano Found in Barents Sea Could Protect Arctic Marine Life

An ancient mud volcano, named the Borealis Mud Volcano, has been discovered 400 meters deep in the Barents Sea. Scientists believe it may serve as a refuge for vulnerable Arctic marine species.

The volcano was spotted during a 2023 expedition by UiT . The Arctic University of Norway, using a remotely operated vehicle from REV Ocean to examine the site in detail.

Professor Giuliana Panieri from UiT described the discovery as “exceptional,” noting that while volcanoes are often viewed as inhospitable, this one creates a stable habitat. Its crusts offer shelter and food to marine life, and the seabed’s temperature of 11.5°C much warmer than the typical 4°C supports a distinct ecosystem.

Researchers plan further studies to understand how the Borealis Mud Volcano’s conditions promote Arctic biodiversity. This discovery sheds light on the hidden complexity of deep-sea environments and their importance for marine life conservation
