CHENNAI – Tamil Nadu has strengthened its position as India’s leading state in wetland conservation with the addition of two new Ramsar sites Sakkarakottai and Therthangal bird sanctuaries in Ramanathapuram District. Chief Minister M K Stalin made the announcement, reaffirming the government’s dedication to preserving the state’s rich natural heritage.
With these additions, Tamil Nadu now boasts 20 Ramsar sites, the highest in India. The milestone follows the launch of the Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission in 2021, under which 19 sites have received Ramsar recognition.
Stalin emphasized the Dravidian model government’s commitment to environmental protection, ensuring that wetlands remain safeguarded for future generations. The recognition of these sites highlights Tamil Nadu’s active role in global conservation efforts, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable development.
