Fourth Bridge Collapse in a Week in Bihar Raises Concerns Over Infrastructure Quality

A bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Kishanganj district on Thursday, the fourth such incident in the state in a week, officials said. The 70 meter long and 12 meter wide bridge in Bahadurganj block experienced a sudden rise in water due to heavy rains, causing one of its piers to fail.

“This bridge was built in 2011 over the Madiya, a small tributary connecting the Kankai and Mahananda Rivers.

Heavy rains across the region in Nepal have caused the water to rise suddenly. One of the piers of the bridge failed to withstand the strong current,” District Magistrate Tushar Singla said. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Authorities have put up barricades at both ends of the bridge to stop any movement while repairs are carried out. Last week, three bridges were reported to have collapsed in Bihar’s Araria, Siwan and Araria districts.

In recent years, there have been several incidents of bridge collapses in the country, raising questions about the quality of public works. Although these incidents did not cause death, they caused great concern among the local population.
