Congress Reinstates Sam Pitroda as Indian Overseas Congress President Amid Controversy

The Congress on Wednesday reinstated Sam Pitroda as the All India Congress president, weeks after he resigned after embarrassing his party with controversial remarks during the Lok Sabha elections. While the Congress leadership assured Pitroda that he would not allow any controversy in the future, the Bharatiya Janata Party strongly opposed the development and said his resignation was a referendum.

As expected by PM Modi, Congress sacked Sam Pitroda only for electoral purposes. Now he has been appointed as the president of the Indian Overseas Congress, exposing the hypocrisy of the Congress party and its leadership.

Sam Pitroda, a close confidant of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, resigned on May 8 after his controversial comment that he was giving the BJP ammunition to attack the Congress.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Wednesday that Sam Pitroda had explained the gist of his speech to party leaders.

“During the election campaign in Pita, Sam Pitroda made several statements and comments that were not accepted by the Indian National Congress. He resigned as the president of the Indian Congress abroad by mutual consent. Finally, he explained the content of the statement. Then, how he was misled by the Modi campaign , the Congress president said that such controversies would be avoided in future by signing an affidavit again that he would not allow it,” he said.

Sam Pitroda created a great controversy by saying that people living in the eastern part of India look like Chinese.

“We lived for 70-75 years in a very happy environment where people could live together and not have a few wars here and there. We could have kept different countries together like India where people in the East look like China. People in the West. look like Arabs, people in the North are white, and people in the south are like Africans, Pitroda said in the podcast.

The party called the remarks “racist and divisive”.

Earlier, Pitroda’s speech on inheritance tax in the United States while discussing the Congress’ Lok Sabha election Manifesto grabbed headlines and the BJP accused the party of planning to redistribute public wealth.
