NASA Shares Stunning Image of Mars’ Moon Phobos, Dubbed “Space Potato”

NASA, the US space agency, regularly shares amazing images from the universe and amazes space lovers. NASA’s social media programs are a treasure trove for those who enjoy viewing educational videos and fun images of Earth and the universe. Now, the space agency has greeted Instagram followers with a photo of a “space potato” in its latest post. Yes, you read that right! The most powerful image ever captured by a camera sent to another planet is Phobos, the largest of Mars‘ two moons.

NASA shared the image: “Phobos is larger than the two moons of Mars, but only 17 x 14 x 11 miles (27 by 22 by 18 kilometers) in diameter. Because Phobos is so small, it has no gravity” sphere (like the Earth. The Moon) is strong enough to draw and draw their own shapes. “

“Phobos is also colliding with Mars, and it will take some time to get there. The red planet is approaching at a rate of six feet (1.8 meters) every hundred years. At that rate, the Moon will either perish or split into Mars. or rings in 50 million years. “He said.

The image was captured by the HiRISE camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft, the space agency said. “Phobos Mars stands out against the darkness of space. The moon is brownish-red and dotted with craters of various sizes. A particularly large crater on the right can be seen as a white patch near Stickney Crater,” wrote NASA in the photo description. .

The space agency shared the image a few days later. It has since garnered over 415,000 likes and several comments. Netizens were shocked to see the picture.

“It looks like it’s made of some kind of metal,” said one user. “We finally found a potato in space,” said another. “Good potatoes in space,” said one user. “Can we turn them into space fries?”

Mainly, according to NASA, Phobos has no atmosphere and orbits Mars three times a day. Another moon of the red planet is called Deimos. American astronomer Asaph Hall discovered the two moons of Mars in 1877. Hall named this month after the mythological son of Mars, the Greek equivalent of the Roman god. Phobos, who represents fear, is the brother of Deimos. The crater is named after Chloe Ann’s wife and mathematician Angeline Stickney Hall.

According to NASA, day-to-day temperature measurements on Phobos have shown extreme variations. The high was -4 degrees and the low was -112 degrees. Scientists believe this is the result of intense heat loss from dust on Phobos, which cannot hold heat.
