IMD Issues ‘Red’ Alert in Two Districts, High Wave Warning – Key Updates

Four people lost their lives in Kerala on Wednesday due to rain-related incidents as the state experienced torrential downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts for Thursday. An ‘orange’ alert has been declared in other districts.

Here are the latest updates:

•The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kerala on May 24 and May 25, with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning likely from May 23 to May 26.

Thiruvananthapuram: A motorcyclist caught in rain, in Thiruvananthapuram, Wednesday, 23.5.24 India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert warning in 10 districts in Kerala.

•High waves between 0.4 to 3.3 meters are expected along Kerala’s coast from Vizhinjam to Kasaragod until Thursday night.

•On Wednesday, a ‘red’ alert was issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki. An ‘orange’ alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, while Kannur and Kasaragod received a ‘yellow’ alert.

 A ‘red’ alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain over 20 cm, an ‘orange’ alert signifies very heavy rainfall from 6 cm to 20 cm, and a ‘yellow’ alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm to 11 cm.

• Four individuals died due to rain-related incidents across various districts.

•Several roads across the state were flooded due to the heavy rains.

•Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea until further notice.

•The Kerala health department has opened a state control room to coordinate epidemic prevention activities and provide support to health workers and the public.

•Health Minister Veena George stated that the control room aims to coordinate activities under the Health Department and address concerns related to the heavy rains.
