Naima Khatoon Appointed Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University

In a historic move, Professor Naima Khatoon has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), marking a significant milestone in the institution’s 123-year history. The Ministry of Education, with approval from President Droupadi Murmu, appointed Ms. Khatoon to this prestigious position, making her the first woman to hold the post.

Ms. Khatoon’s journey at AMU began in August 1988 when she started as a lecturer. Over the years, she ascended through the ranks, eventually becoming a Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Psychology. Her dedication and expertise led her to serve in various administrative roles, including Deputy Director of the Residential Coaching Academy and Deputy Proctor.

With a PhD in Political Psychology, earned through research conducted at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, and AMU, Ms. Khatoon brings a wealth of academic experience to her new role. She has also taught at the National University of Rwanda and presented her research findings at esteemed institutions worldwide.

A prolific writer and researcher, Ms. Khatoon has authored several books and published numerous papers in national and international journals, focusing on clinical, health, applied social, and spiritual psychology. Her contributions to academia have earned her recognition, including the Papa Mian Padma Bhushan Best Girl Award for all-round excellence.

Ms. Khatoon’s appointment not only reflects her personal achievements but also underscores AMU’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. As the third central university to appoint a woman Vice Chancellor, AMU sets a precedent for gender representation in academic leadership, paving the way for future generations of women scholars.
