North Korea Launches Ballistic Missile into Sea of Japan

Seoul, South Korea: North Korea conducted a ballistic missile launch into the Sea of Japan, known as the East Sea, as confirmed by the South Korean military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff on Tuesday. The missile launch occurred less than two weeks after North Korean state media reported that leader Kim Jong Un had supervised a successful test of a solid-fuel engine for a “new-type intermediate-range hypersonic missile.”

According to reports, Japan also acknowledged the launch, with the country’s coast guard indicating that the missile had fallen into the sea.

This recent launch marks the third ballistic missile test conducted by North Korea this year. In addition to the March test overseen by Kim Jong Un, another test involving a missile equipped with a manoeuvrable hypersonic warhead took place in January.

North Korea has previously asserted that it successfully tested its first solid-fuelled Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) last year. Solid-fuel missiles offer operational advantages as they do not require fueling before launch, making them harder to detect and quicker to deploy.

Amidst these missile tests, North Korea has escalated its rhetoric, designating South Korea as its “principal enemy,” dismantling agencies dedicated to reunification efforts, and issuing threats of conflict over perceived territorial violations.

The series of missile tests and provocative actions by North Korea continue to escalate tensions in the region, raising concerns among neighboring countries and the international community about the stability and security of the Korean Peninsula.
