Ronald Mallett, Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Connecticut, has made headlines with his assertion of having developed the equation for time travel, as reported by Earth.com. Mallett’s fascination with time travel and his pursuit of its equation stem from a deeply personal experience in his childhood. At the age of 10, Mallett’s life took a profound turn when his father passed away suddenly from a heart attack, an event that sparked his lifelong quest to explore the possibility of time travel.
His journey into the realms of time manipulation was sparked by literature, notably H.G. Wells’ iconic novel “The Time Machine.” Reflecting on the impact of the book, Mallett recalls how the first paragraph altered the course of his life, particularly the idea that time could be traversed akin to spatial dimensions.
Throughout his career, Mallett delved into the theories of renowned physicist Albert Einstein, particularly focusing on black holes and general relativity. However, it was during a period of recuperation in the hospital after experiencing a heart condition that Mallett experienced his breakthrough. He realized that black holes, with their ability to distort spacetime, could potentially facilitate the creation of time loops, enabling travel backward in time.
Mallett envisions a time machine powered by an intense and continuous rotating beam of light, mimicking the gravitational effects of a black hole. He describes this mechanism as utilizing a ring of lasers to induce spacetime distortion, akin to the swirling motion observed when stirring a cup of coffee.
Despite the conceptual breakthrough, Mallett acknowledges the immense energy requirements and logistical challenges of constructing such a device. He concedes that the feasibility and timeline for its realization remain uncertain. Nonetheless, he remains steadfast in his belief that he has cracked the theoretical framework for time travel, emphasizing the potential of his discovery.
