Amit Shah Defends Electoral Bonds, Challenges Rahul Gandhi’s Allegations

Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi‘s criticism of electoral bonds by challenging him to explain the source of ₹1,600 crore in donations he allegedly received. Shah defended the use of electoral bonds, stating that they have significantly reduced black money in politics.

Speaking at a summit hosted by CNN News 18, Shah dismissed Gandhi’s accusation of the BJP operating the ‘biggest extortion racket,’ emphasizing the transparency of electoral bond donations. When questioned about revealing donors’ lists, Shah asserted that the opposition bloc would not be able to withstand similar scrutiny.

Recent disclosures by political parties unveiled the significant amounts received through electoral bonds, with the BJP leading with ₹6,061 crore, followed by the Trinamool Congress and Congress. Notably, Future Gaming, headed by lottery king Santiago Martin, emerged as the largest purchaser of electoral bonds.

Responding to allegations of excessive donations, Shah countered by comparing the BJP’s contributions to those of the ‘Indi Alliance’ led by Rahul Gandhi, claiming that the latter received more than ₹6,200 crore. Shah defended the BJP’s record, highlighting its substantial presence in both national and state politics.

Shah’s remarks come in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling against electoral bonds, which he acknowledged while maintaining the bonds’ efficacy in curbing black money. He criticized the opposition bloc for opposing electoral bonds, alleging a desire to revert to the “old system of cut money” in politics.
