Southwest monsoon in India as a whole may be a common occurrence: IMD

India is likely to experience normal rainfall during storms in the southwest this year, India’s Ministry of Meteorology said on Thursday. Rainfall will be 96 to 104 percent of the Long Term (LPA) 87 cm of the period 1971-2020, it was noted. Previously, IMD used to consider the LPA 88cm of the 1961- 2010. “The average rainfall throughout India from 1971-2020 (the period) of the southwest rainy season is 868.6 mm. It will cover an average of 880.6mm based on 1961-2010,” he said.

Extraordinary rainfall is most likely in most areas in the northern part of peninsular India, central India, near the Himalayas hills and other parts of northwestern India. Under normal rainfall is possible in most parts of northeastern India, parts of northwestern India and parts of the southern peninsula.

In 2021, the country received “normal” rainfall during the southwest rainy season of four months from June to September. It has been three years in a row when the country records rainfall in the normal or higher normal range. Rainfall was above normal in 2019 and 2020.
