PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates World’s Longest Twin-Lane Tunnel ‘Sela Tunnel’ in Arunachal Pradesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a momentous journey to Arunachal Pradesh, unveiling a landmark achievement in India’s infrastructural landscape – the inauguration of the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel, aptly named the ‘Sela Tunnel‘. The grand ceremony unfolded amidst the vibrant cityscape of Itanagar, as PM Modi graced the occasion as part of the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit North East’ program, marking a pivotal milestone in the region’s developmental trajectory.

Constructed at a breathtaking elevation of 13,000 feet by the indomitable efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the Sela Tunnel stands as a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to progress, with an investment of ₹825 crore. Comprising two tunnels, Tunnel 1 stretches 1,003 meters while Tunnel 2 boasts a remarkable twin-tube length of 1,595 meters. Complementing these feats are two roads spanning 8.6 km, promising enhanced connectivity and accessibility.

The significance of the Sela Tunnel transcends mere infrastructure, heralding a new era of all-weather connectivity to Tawang, nestled along the China border. With travel time to Tawang slashed by at least an hour, the tunnel promises expedited deployment of vital resources, reinforcing India’s strategic preparedness along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Nestled near the formidable Sela Pass, the tunnel emerges as a beacon of resilience, overcoming the perennial challenges posed by snowfall and landslides that plague the Balipara-Charidwar-Tawang Road. Beyond its strategic imperative, the Sela Tunnel heralds a dawn of socio-economic prosperity, amplifying opportunities for the region’s growth trajectory.

The journey to the Sela Tunnel’s fruition has been rife with challenges, from the foundation laid by PM Modi in February 2019 to the obstacles exacerbated by the global Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, amidst adversity, India’s steadfast resolve shines forth, epitomizing a relentless pursuit of progress.

As the Sela Tunnel stands tall, it symbolizes India’s resolute stride towards bolstering border infrastructure, bridging the gap with China while safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity. With every inch of concrete, the Sela Tunnel etches a narrative of fortitude, promising a brighter, more connected future for Arunachal Pradesh and the nation at large.
