India’s Green Hydrogen Revolution Takes Flight: Government Unveils Ambitious Pilot Project Guidelines to Transform Transport Sector

In a bold step towards sustainable energy adoption, the Government of India has unveiled pioneering guidelines for initiating pilot projects harnessing the power of Green Hydrogen within the transport sector. Issued under the esteemed National Green Hydrogen Mission by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) on February 14, 2024, these guidelines signify a monumental leap towards a greener, more resilient future.

With the rapidly declining costs of renewable energy sources and electrolyzers, the feasibility of green hydrogen-powered vehicles is poised to soar in the coming years. Envisioning a future where economies of scale and technological breakthroughs propel green hydrogen transport to new heights, India is poised to lead the charge towards sustainable mobility.

Under the aegis of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the MNRE, in tandem with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and designated Scheme Implementing Agencies (SIAs), will spearhead pilot projects aimed at phasing out fossil fuels in favor of green hydrogen and its derivatives. These visionary projects will encompass the development of cutting-edge technologies for green hydrogen utilization in buses, trucks, and 4-wheelers, leveraging fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based propulsion technologies.

In addition to fostering technological innovation, the scheme will prioritize the establishment of crucial infrastructure, including hydrogen refueling stations, to support the burgeoning green hydrogen ecosystem within the transport sector. Furthermore, the initiative will explore innovative avenues for reducing carbon emissions, such as blending methanol/ethanol based on green hydrogen and integrating synthetic fuels derived from the renewable resource into automobile fuels.

With a substantial budgetary outlay of Rs. 496 Crores allocated until the financial year 2025-26, the government’s commitment to catalyzing green hydrogen adoption underscores its unwavering dedication to sustainable development and energy independence. As green hydrogen utilization in the transport sector gains momentum, the envisioned ecosystem is poised to drive significant infrastructure development and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.

The launch of the Scheme Guidelines represents a pivotal milestone in India’s journey towards clean energy leadership and self-reliance, aligning with the broader objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission inaugurated on January 4, 2023. With an ambitious outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores earmarked up to FY 2029-30, the mission heralds a transformative era of decarbonization, reduced fossil fuel dependency, and global inspiration for the Clean Energy Transition.
