Ukraine Claims Destruction of Most Russian Attack Drones, Little Damage Reported

Ukraine reported the destruction of the majority of 45 attack drones launched by Russia overnight, with limited damage reported on Sunday morning. The announcement follows a deadly Russian attack that resulted in seven casualties and a petrol station blaze in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

According to the Ukrainian air force on Telegram, combat operations led to the destruction of 40 enemy Shahed (UAV) drones out of the 45 launched by Russian forces. While falling debris lightly wounded a 39-year-old man in the southern region of Dnipro, authorities in Kyiv and the central Cherkasy region reported no significant damage.

However, aerial guided bombs struck the village of Vodyane in the Kharkiv region, resulting in the death of a 56-year-old woman, according to governor Oleg Synegubov. The previous day, seven individuals were killed in Kharkiv after a Russian drone attack ignited a petrol station, causing burning fuel to spill onto the neighboring street. Additionally, attacks were reported in the Black Sea port of Odesa and industrial installations near the Moldovan border in Izmail.

Moldovan police discovered fragments of what they believe to be an Iranian-made Shahed drone near the town of Etulia on their side of the border. Moldovan President Maia Sandu emphasized the gravity of Russia’s aggression, stressing the need for continued support for Ukraine.

Ukrainian intelligence revealed that Russian forces have begun using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service on the frontline, previously utilized by Ukrainian troops but not by Moscow’s forces. The network, crucial for Ukrainian military communications, is now reportedly being employed by Russian occupiers, according to Andriy Yusov, spokesman for Kyiv’s Main Directorate of Military Intelligence.

Despite Kyiv’s gratitude to Musk’s SpaceX firm for providing access to Starlink technology, recent remarks by Musk suggesting land concessions for peace settlements caused unease. Musk claimed to have prevented a Ukrainian attack on a Russian navy base in 2022 by declining a request from Kyiv to activate Starlink internet access near the Moscow-annexed Crimean peninsula.
