BMC water for all in Mumbai slums says Aaditya Thackeray

Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will introduce a ‘Water for All’ policy to provide water connectivity to all residents. Announcing this from BMC headquarters on Monday, Cabinet Minister Aaditya Thackeray said, “Every citizen of Mumbai will have access to water. This policy will apply from Maharashtra Day namely; from May 1, 2022. “

This policy was announced in the 2022 public budget. It aims to improve the supply of water to areas that do not have access to water in a community organization, such as informal settlements on private or commercial land, or informal institutions.

In its policy statement, BMC stated, “Water is a fundamental right. According to Article 21 of the Constitution of India, every citizen has the right to safe drinking water. In this regard, BMC has developed a new policy regarding water supply, where water connections will be available to all residents of Mumbai. It will provide water connectivity to people living in unauthorized informal settlements, including private and public areas, who live in coastal areas. ” BMC is likely to provide water pumps in three illegally shack-built shack structures under the policy. After his budget speech on February 9, municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal clarified that this did not mean that illegal slums would be legal, and it was not in the public interest to do so. “Everyone deserves a drink of water, and a community organization will ensure that.” On Monday, the BMC said, “This water connection will not be used as proof that it is legal in the future.” Policy approved in principle. “The policy framework is widely approved. It will also go through a round of proposals, debate and will take effect from May 1 this year, ”said P Velrasu, an additional municipal commissioner, Projects.
