Astrobotic’s Peregrine lander, part of an experimental NASA-private industry partnership, has been lost over the remote South Pacific, marking a fiery end to its mission to land on the Moon. Launched on January 8, the lander experienced an explosion shortly after separating from its rocket, leading to fuel leaks and outer shell damage.
The loss was confirmed as a “controlled re-entry over open water.” Astrobotic, based in Pittsburgh, aimed to reduce costs through collaboration with NASA. Despite its failure to land, the mission carried science instruments for NASA and private clients, including DNA and cremated remains.
