New Deep-Sea Octopus Species Unveiled Off the Coast of Costa Rica

January 19, 2024 In a recent daring expedition off the coast of Costa Rica, scientists aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s R/V Falkor made a captivating discovery – at least four new deep-sea octopus species, including a species tentatively named the “Dorado octopus.” The breakthrough adds to our understanding of the diverse and enigmatic life forms inhabiting the ocean’s depths.

The international science team conducted two expeditions in 2023, exploring seamounts off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. During the first expedition in June, the team encountered two octopus nurseries connected to hydrothermal springs. Returning six months later, they confirmed the nurseries were active year-round and also identified several new octopus species in locations beyond the hydrothermal springs.

The researchers were particularly intrigued by the sight of baby deep-sea octopuses gently emerging from semi-transparent eggs, highlighting the significance of the find. The newly discovered species offer valuable insights into the hidden ecosystems of the deep ocean, expanding our knowledge of the various life forms that thrive in these environments.

This discovery underscores the importance of continued scientific exploration in uncovering the wonders concealed beneath the ocean’s surface. The unnamed Dorado octopus and its counterparts join the ever-growing collection of remarkable sea creatures, enriching our understanding of the biodiversity within the deep-sea realm.
