Late on Tuesday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a series of explosions near a cargo ship navigating the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The strait is a crucial waterway that separates the Arabian Peninsula from the Horn of Africa.
The UKMTO, a maritime security agency run by the Royal Navy, stated that it had received reports of up to three explosions occurring 1-5 nautical miles from the merchant vessel. The ship was reportedly traveling between the coasts of Eritrea and Yemen when the incidents took place.
Fortunately, the master of the vessel reported no damage to the ship, and the crew is currently reported as safe. Authorities are actively investigating the nature and source of the reported explosions.
In recent weeks, the region has experienced a surge in security concerns due to multiple drone and missile strikes launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels. These attacks have targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, posing a significant threat to maritime traffic.
The Huthis have stated that their attacks are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, where ongoing conflict persists between Israel and the Hamas group. Notably, the rebels have issued warnings that they will target ships with perceived links to Israel in the Red Sea.
Several nations, including the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, have deployed warships in the area to intercept and neutralize Huthi-launched missiles and drones. The Pentagon has reported dozens of attacks by the rebels on merchant ships, raising concerns about the safety of one of the world’s busiest maritime transit routes.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a crucial chokepoint through which a significant portion of global trade, estimated at up to 12 percent, passes. As a response to the heightened security risks, the United States has initiated a multinational naval task force to safeguard shipping in the Red Sea.
As investigations into the recent explosions unfold, the maritime industry and concerned nations remain vigilant, navigating the delicate balance of securing vital trade routes while addressing the security challenges posed by regional conflicts.
