In a significant move, the Tata Group is planning to establish a semiconductor processing plant in Assam, with an anticipated investment of approximately Rs 40,000 crore, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The conglomerate has already submitted an application and engaged in discussions with the state government, seeking the final nod from the Central government, which is expected imminently.
Addressing a gathering, Chief Minister Sarma revealed that Tata Electronics Ltd has proposed the establishment of an electronic center in Jagiroad, located about 55 km from Guwahati, the state’s largest city. The ambitious project signifies a major stride towards industrialization and is poised to create a positive economic environment in the state.
The Tata Group has demonstrated its commitment to the initiative by also approaching the state government to train 1,000 individuals for potential employment in the semiconductor assembly and packaging plant. Chief Minister Sarma expressed optimism about the investment, highlighting the changing landscape in the state, which is witnessing a shift towards the electronics and IT industry.
The move aligns with the Assam Semiconductor Manufacturing and Electronic Production Policy, approved by the state cabinet in August. As Assam paves the way for significant investments in the semiconductor sector, this development is expected to contribute to the state’s economic growth and technological advancement.
