India Marks 365 Days of G20 Presidency with Emphasis on Multilateralism and Inclusive Development

India commemorates 365 days since assuming the G20 presidency, reflecting on its commitment to multilateralism and human-centric progress. Amid the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, climate threats, financial instability, and declining multilateralism, India sought to redefine the global conversation and reform multilateralism fundamentally.

Under the theme of inclusivity, India welcomed the African Union (AU) as a permanent member of the G20, integrating 55 African nations and expanding the forum’s representation to cover 80% of the global population. The “Voice of the Global South Summit” and “Jan Bhagidari” events exemplified India’s commitment to mainstreaming the concerns of developing countries, making the G20 presidency a people’s initiative.

At the heart of India’s G20 agenda was the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD), unanimously adopted by all G20 members. The declaration outlined an inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive approach, addressing interconnected issues such as health, education, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.

India presented the G20 2023 Action Plan to Accelerate Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on a cross-cutting, action-oriented strategy. The Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) initiative showcased India’s technological prowess, leading to the creation of the Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, promoting global collaboration in digital innovations.

The “Green Development Pact” and a call for tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030 underscored India’s commitment to a cleaner, greener world. The G20 Declaration emphasized climate justice and equity, urging substantial financial and technological support from developed nations. A historic recognition of the need for trillions of dollars in development financing highlighted the magnitude of resources required.

Gender equality took center stage, with the formation of a dedicated Working Group on the Empowerment of Women. India’s Women’s Reservation Bill 2023, reserving one-third of Parliament and state legislative assembly seats for women, exemplified its commitment to women-led development.

The New Delhi Declaration symbolizes a renewed spirit of collaboration, with a focus on policy coherence, reliable trade, and ambitious climate action. During India’s G20 presidency, the forum achieved 87 outcomes and 18 adopted documents, signaling a significant rise from previous years.

As India hands over the G20 presidency to Brazil, it does so with the conviction that collective efforts for people, planet, peace, and prosperity will resonate for years to come.
