NASA Administrator Bill Nelson is set to visit India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for a series of meetings with key government officials and space agencies. The visit to India aligns with the United States and India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, led by President Joe Biden. Nelson will explore opportunities for collaboration, particularly in human exploration and Earth science.
During the India visit, Nelson will tour facilities in Bengaluru, where the NISAR spacecraft is undergoing testing and integration. NISAR, a joint Earth-observing mission between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), aims to launch in 2024. As the first satellite mission between NASA and ISRO, NISAR will play a crucial role in measuring Earth’s changing ecosystems, surfaces, and ice masses, providing valuable information for climate change, hazard mitigation, agriculture, and more.
In the UAE, Nelson will participate in the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, marking the first time a NASA administrator attends the conference. The focus will be on highlighting NASA’s role as a global leader in delivering essential Earth-science data to decision-makers.
Additionally, Nelson will engage with students in both countries to discuss science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and encourage their participation in the Artemis Generation, emphasizing the importance of youth in advancing space exploration and innovation. The visit underscores NASA’s commitment to international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge in the field of space exploration and Earth science.
