Chauvin is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating George Floyd’s civil rights and an additional concurrent 22.5 years for murder in the Minnesota state court. The attack took place at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, where an unidentified inmate assaulted Chauvin. The Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that life-saving measures were initiated, and the injured individual was transported to a hospital.

The incident follows Chauvin’s high-profile trial and conviction in 2021, which sparked global protests against police brutality and racism. Floyd’s death occurred when Chauvin, a white officer, knelt on the neck of the handcuffed Black man for over nine minutes, an act captured on cellphone video that fueled widespread outrage.
