WHO Requests Detailed Information from China on Increase in Respiratory Illnesses

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially requested detailed information from China regarding an increase in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children. Chinese authorities recently reported a surge in respiratory diseases, attributing it to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the circulation of various pathogens.

The WHO is seeking additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results from reported outbreaks among children, through the International Health Regulations mechanism. The global health agency is in contact with clinicians and scientists in China to gather comprehensive data and assess the situation. Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in influenza-like illness, and the WHO recommends preventive measures, including vaccination and hygiene practices, while further information is awaited.
