Babar Azam Contemplates Captaincy Future Amidst Criticism, Teammates Urge Him to Stay On

Pakistan’s skipper, Babar Azam, is reportedly considering his future as captain following the team’s below-par performance in the T20 World Cup. The team’s fifth-place finish has led to criticism of both Babar’s captaincy and batting. Despite the disappointment, reports suggest that the majority of players, including Imam ul Haq, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Hasan Ali, have advised Babar against stepping down.
A PCB source revealed, “Babar has already spoken to his teammates, and the majority of them advised him not to step down himself. He will come out with a clear line of action once he returns home with the team after failing to make the semi-finals of the World Cup in India. But, he will not step down himself.”
Having faced criticism for his captaincy in Tests and ODIs, Babar has found strong support from key players in the team. With challenging tours to Australia and New Zealand on the horizon, Babar is likely to continue as captain unless asked to step down by the selectors or PCB.
The decision on Babar’s captaincy is expected to be left to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by Zaka Ashraf. PCB head Zaka has emphasized consulting former players, including Misbah ul Haq, Muhammad Hafeez, and others, before making decisions regarding team management.
Babar Azam took over the white-ball captaincy in 2019 and later assumed the role of Test captain in 2021. While successful in T20 Internationals, his records in Tests and ODIs have faced criticism. The PCB is expected to make decisions on the captaincy after consulting with former players and considering the team’s future direction.
