Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Apologizes for Controversial Remarks on Women’s Education and Population Control

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has issued an apology following a storm of controversy sparked by his remarks in the state assembly. In a bid to address the issue of population control, Kumar’s comments about women’s education were deemed offensive and vulgar by opposition leaders. In this article, we delve into the controversy surrounding the Chief Minister’s statements and his subsequent apology.

During a session in the state assembly, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar highlighted the importance of women’s education in addressing the issue of population control. However, the language and graphic nature of his comments raised eyebrows and provoked strong reactions from opposition parties. His words were criticized for being derogatory, leading to protests by opposition members and objections to his entry into the assembly.

Recognizing the uproar caused by his comments, Nitish Kumar offered an apology, stating, “Mai apne shabd wapas leta hu, humane yun hi ye bate kehdi thi… Mere bayan ka galat matlab nikala gaya… Maine to mahilao ki shiksha ki bat ki thi.. Agar mere banyan se koi aahat hua hai to maafi maangta hu.” (I take back my words. My comments have been misconstituted. I just talked about women’s education. I apologize if my statements have hurt anybody.)

Population Control and Women’s Education

Kumar’s initial comments were intended to emphasize the role of women’s education in managing population growth. He referred to Bihar’s declining fertility rate, highlighting the correlation between female education and reduced birth rates. However, his choice of words and the graphic nature of his statements led to widespread condemnation.

The controversial remarks triggered immediate reactions, with opposition legislators and leaders expressing outrage. Protests in the assembly resulted in Nitish Kumar initially being denied entry. After managing to enter, he clarified that his comments were misinterpreted, reiterating his focus on women’s education in the context of population control.
