Nepal Hit by Aftershock Following Devastating 6.4-Magnitude Earthquake

Kathmandu, Nepal faced further seismic activity with a 4.2-magnitude aftershock recorded in the aftermath of a devastating 6.4-magnitude earthquake that rocked the country’s remote mountainous region, claiming 157 lives. The aftershock was registered in the Jajarkot district at 3:40 PM local time on Saturday.

The National Earthquake Monitoring Centre reported that the aftershock had a magnitude of 4.2, with its epicenter located in Ramidanda. This tremor is considered an aftershock of the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck on Friday night.

The earthquake on Friday, which occurred about 500 kilometers west of Kathmandu, has been the most powerful in Nepal since the 2015 earthquake, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 9,000 people and injuries to more than 22,000 others.

Home Ministry officials have stated that, as of now, 1,800 houses in Jajarkot have been completely damaged, with an additional 2,500 homes affected in Rukum West. The casualties in Jajarkot and Rukum stand at 157 deaths and around 200 injuries.

Survivors in the affected areas are in urgent need of tents, blankets, and food items. Chandra Prakash Khatri, Mayor of Bheri Municipality in Jajarkot district, stressed the importance of these supplies, saying, “We have successfully carried out rescue work and now we need tents, blankets, and food items immediately.”

The Chairman of Barekot Rural Municipality in Jajarkot highlighted that 80 percent of the houses in his municipality had been severely damaged and needed reconstruction. Many people are now residing in open spaces, fields, and under trees and bushes without shelter. Blankets and tents are urgently required to provide relief.

Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal, after inspecting the earthquake-hit areas of Jajarkot and Rukum, instructed relevant agencies to expedite rescue and relief operations in the affected region. A Cabinet meeting is scheduled for Sunday morning to make necessary decisions for conducting relief and rehabilitation activities.
