Government Approves 110 of 111 IT Hardware Import Applications Worth Nearly $10 Billion

The Indian government has cleared 110 of the total 111 applications for imports of IT hardware products, including laptops and computers, worth nearly $10 billion on the first day of implementing the new system. The companies that received import approvals include major players like Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP India Sales, ASUS India, Samsung India Electronics, Xiaomi Technology India, and others.
The new system aims to monitor shipments of IT hardware products without disrupting market supply or creating a cumbersome licensing regime. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) conducted consultations with stakeholders to explain the process for seeking authorizations under the new system, ensuring a smooth transition.

The approval process appears to be efficient, with all applications being disposed of within the stipulated time. There are no pending applications, except for one that was rejected because the Hyderabad-based vendor was on the denied entity list.
India imported IT hardware products worth $8.7 billion in 2022-23, compared to $10.3 billion in 2021-22 and $7.1 billion in 2020-21. This new import management system seeks to strengthen India’s trusted supply chain and keep an eye on the import of IT hardware.
The authorizations will be valid until September 2024, and companies on the denied entity list, as well as those interested in importing second-hand or refurbished goods, are not eligible for this authorization. The process has been streamlined and is aimed at meeting the needs of the IT industry.
The significant approval of import applications is indicative of a successful transition to the new system without causing undue hassle for authorization seekers.
