The Indian National Congress has unveiled its initial list of 33 candidates for the upcoming Rajasthan assembly elections. The party’s list includes prominent figures like Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot, Assembly Speaker CP Joshi, and State Party Chief Govind Singh Dotasara.
Out of the candidates, five are current ministers, while the remaining include 28 sitting MLAs and an independent candidate. Notably, three leaders who had rebelled against Chief Minister Gehlot during the political crisis in July 2020 have been selected to run in the elections.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is fielded from Sardarpura, while former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot is running from Tonk. Assembly Speaker CP Joshi is chosen to contest from Nathdwara (Udaipur), and State Party Chief Govind Singh Dotasara is fielded from Lachhmangarh (Sikar).
The party has nominated nine women candidates, including Krishna Poonia, Rita Choudhary, and others. The list also incorporates several young candidates and individuals from diverse regions and communities.
A senior Congress leader emphasized that the first list reflects a focus on youth, new faces, and female candidates. Approximately 80% of the nominees are below the age of 50, with 16 being below 45.
Political analysts suggest that the Congress is aiming for a diverse candidate pool to ensure representation from different regions and communities. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded by describing the list as controversial and stating that the Congress is lacking new faces.
As the political landscape heats up ahead of the Rajasthan assembly elections, the initial list of Congress candidates provides an insight into the party’s strategy, emphasizing youth, diversity, and experience in its choice of nominees.
