Punjab: CM Bhagwant Mann Announces Doorstep Ration Delivery Scheme

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the implementation of the “doorstep ration delivery scheme” on Monday. He said that now the poor will not have to stand in queues for hours or leave their work as ration will be delivered to their doorsteps.

However, Mann said in the video message that the scheme will be optional for the eligible recipients. He further said that the details of the scheme will be circulated very soon.

“The AAP government has decided to start the doorstep delivery of ration scheme. Under the scheme, good quality ration items will be delivered at the beneficiaries’ doorstep and no one will now need to stand in queues or leave his work for this,” he said.

“Our officers will make a phone call to the beneficiaries and ration will be delivered at their homes as per their convenience and availability,” said the newly elected Chief Minister.

Mann said that if the ration depot happens to be very close to home, the beneficiaries can collect the ration from there if they wish to.

The Punjab Chief Minister stated that the AAP Government had started this scheme in Delhi too, “but unfortunately it was stopped. He went on to say that in Punjab the government will implement the scheme and we will also run it successfully.

In this digital age, various daily need items including food and grocery items are delivered to people’s doorsteps in just a phone call, Mann said.

“But on many occasions, poor people, most of who are daily wagers, have to give up their day’s work for collecting ration from fair price shops. It is sad if a person who is living hand to mouth, has to leave his day’s work to fetch his ration,” Mann added.

“I know many elderly women who have to walk two km to get their ration from depots, whose quality is sometimes not that good,” said Mann.

“Governments are for the people, they are elected by the people and governments should be to facilitate people and not to harass them or create problems for them,” he pointed out.

“You will get good quality ration, what people commonly consume, what rich consume, you will get the same flour, pulses..,” he further said.

Just a week back, Mann, in the first decision after his first Cabinet meeting, opened up 25,000 positions in various departments of the state government, including 10,000 vacancies in the Police Department.

In February’s Punjab Assembly polls, the Aam Aadmi Party came to power, winning 92 of the 117 seats in the state assembly, thus annihilating the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance and the BJP-Punjab Lok Congress-SAD (Sanyukt) alliance.

The Congress, which was in power in the state till then, had managed to win just 18 seats.
