Tesla Chief Elon Musk said in a tweet that he is giving “serious thought” to creating a new social media platform.
Musk was replying to a Twitter user’s query on whether Elon would consider building a social media platform that may work on an open source algorithm that would support free speech, and where propaganda might be minimal.
Elon Musk, being an active Twitter user himself, has been criticizing the social media platform and its policies in the recent times. He has said that the company is threatening democracy by non adherence to the principles of free speech.
His tweet has come a day after he started a Twitter poll asking Twitter users if they had faith that Twitter adheres to the principle of free speech, to which more than 70 percent of the users voted in denial.
“The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully,” he tweeted on Friday.
If Elon Musk decides to move forward with the creation of a new social media platform, he would be joining a large and ever growing group of companies that are labeling themselves as the torchbearers of free speech.
All such platforms hope to pull in users from other platforms, who feel that their views are being quelled on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
Not one of the companies has come even close to equaling the reach and popularity of the mainstream platforms such as Facebook, YouTube or Twitter.
As of 2021, YouTube had approximately 2.3 billion monthly active users globally, whereas Twitter had 217 million users. Also, Facebook had over 2.85 billion monthly active users worldwide. Other social media platforms such as Instagram and Whatsapp have over 1 billion active users.
