Old parliament called now as Samvidhan Sadan as a New Chapter Begins as India’s Parliament Moves to Its Modern Home

In a momentous shift in India’s political landscape, the old Parliament building, steeped in history, has been given a new name—’Samvidhan Sadan‘, announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This announcement coincided with the formal relocation of the Parliament’s operations to its new, modern building.

Speaker Om Birla also revealed that the terminology previously associated with the Lok Sabha proceedings, such as ‘House,’ ‘Lobby,’ and ‘Galleries,’ will now pertain to the new Parliament House of India.

“The building where we gathered in the morning will now be known as Samvidhan Sadan,” Speaker Om Birla declared.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at a function held in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building, expressed the sentiment of preserving the legacy of this iconic structure. “We are shifting to the new Parliament building. It is an auspicious day, it is Ganesh Chaturthi,” he remarked.

Modi went on to suggest the renaming of the old Parliament building to “Samvidhan Sadan,” emphasizing the need to uphold its grandeur even as the legislative body moves to its contemporary setting. His words echoed the recognition of the building’s historical significance.

On this historic occasion, members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha congregated in the hallowed Central Hall of the old Parliament building, marking the transition with a blend of nostalgia and forward-looking aspirations. This monumental change represents not only a shift in location but also the evolution of India’s democracy and its commitment to preserving the ideals enshrined in its constitution, the ‘Samvidhan’.
