US Announces Over $1 Billion in Aid for Ukraine, Including Military Assistance

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced new aid for Ukraine totaling more than $1 billion during his visit to Kyiv. This aid includes approximately $665 million in new military and civilian security assistance. Among the military equipment provided are HIMARS missile launch systems, Javelin antitank weapons, Abrams tanks, and other weapons systems. The Pentagon will also send depleted uranium ammunition, known for its effectiveness in piercing armor but controversial in its use.

The aid package aims to support Ukraine in its ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces in the country’s southeast. Blinken highlighted the progress made in recent weeks in the counteroffensive and stated that the new assistance would help sustain and build further momentum.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the US support but also warned of challenging months ahead as winter approaches. He emphasized the importance of continued partnership.

Russia did not immediately comment on a recent attack in Kostiantynivka, an eastern town near the front line, where at least 16 people were killed and dozens wounded in a market shelling. Zelenskyy described the attack as a deliberate assault on a peaceful city. The White House condemned the attack as “brutal.”

The European Union also condemned the attack, labeling it “heinous and barbaric.” The situation in Ukraine remains a significant point of tension in international relations, with ongoing concerns about the conflict’s escalation and humanitarian impact.
