Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel‘s blockbuster entertainer, Gadar 2, has seen a slowdown at the box office as moviegoers eagerly anticipate the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan.” Advance bookings for the latter film have already broken records, creating stiff competition.
According to rough data reported by Sacnilk.com, Gadar 2 earned ₹2.6 crore on Tuesday, with similar numbers reported on Monday. The Anil Sharma film has now amassed a total of ₹506.27 crore. It crossed the ₹500 crore milestone on its fourth Sunday and is now eyeing the domestic box office numbers of Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan” (₹543 crore) and the Hindi version of SS Rajamouli’s “Baahubali: The Conclusion” (₹510.99 crore). Whether it can achieve this feat remains to be seen, as Gadar 2 has slowed down ahead of the release of “Jawan,” which hits theaters on Thursday.
“Gadar 2” made a whopping ₹55 crore on Independence Day, sparking predictions of it potentially breaking records. Film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi had said that Gadar 2 had the potential to outperform not only “Pathaan” but any other box office record. Film trade analyst Komal Nahta also noted a 95 percent chance of Gadar 2 surpassing “Pathaan.”
Anil Sharma, the film’s director, celebrated the film’s success as it crossed the ₹500 crore mark, tweeting, “Dil Jhoom jhoom jaye… 500+ Cr. GADAR GADAR… GADAR… #GADAR2 Congratulations.” The film’s success party was attended by the cast, crew, and numerous Bollywood heavyweights, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan.
“Gadar 2” made a remarkable return after 22 years since the successful first installment, “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha,” which collected ₹76.88 crore at the domestic box office. The film reunited the iconic onscreen pairing of Sunny Deol as Tara Singh and Ameesha Patel as Sakeena. “Gadar 2” continues the story with Tara Singh journeying to Pakistan once again to rescue his son Charanjeet (Utkarsh Sharma) after he is captured on the wrong side of the border.
